Recording can be an intimidating process, especially if you are new to it and not familiar with its processes. As an engineer, I know this from first hand experience. Well fear not! I am here to help you and shed some light on it all. Here are a few simple tips to ensure a smooth and efficient session:
Performance
Be able to play all of your songs WITH A METRONOME.
– This is easily the most important step, thus the reason I mention it first. It is also helpful, though not necessary, if you know the tempos of your songs before coming to record! There are some exceptions to this rule, however. (i.e. Live sessions, one track sessions)
Know all of your parts backwards and forwards.
– I typically do have bands record a scratch guitar/vocal track for reference, but that is merely to act as a guide. You need to know your bands songs!
Be open to change.
– The studio is a creative environment. The best way for a song to reach its maximum potential is through the synergy of everyone present. Changes will be made, things may get re-written, compromises will be reached. Its important to not coddle your song like an overbearing mother, because someday, its gonna move out and have to stand on its own.
Play with confidence.
– This is another important one. Play out and play with conviction. A performance lacking in confidence will show itself.
Write within your skill set.
– Write parts that you are capable of playing at full tempo.
Equipment
Make sure your equipment works.
– A no brainer, yes. But nonetheless important. Put in fresh batteries. Get your guitars intonated for the tuning your band plays in. My guitars are available for use, but are setup for E standard tuning. If you tune to drop B flat, don’t expect my house guitars to hold perfect tune.
Change your strings/drumheads.
– I try to keep the strings and heads on house instruments nice and fresh, so do the same with instruments you bring as well. If you don’t have time to pick up new heads or strings, the studio is just down the street from Atomic Music.
Recording can and should be a fun and expressive experience for you/your band. Following these steps will ensure that you have a successful and efficient recording session every time (especially when you come to one the most professional recording studios in Marlyland 🙂
